“Stellenbosch University (SU) has over the past 100 years become known for its spirit of mutual togetherness, support and friendship. Stellenbosch offers a unique personal experience that will prepare you to succeed in a diverse and changing world."
With these words, Prof Arnold Schoonwinkel, Vice-Rector: Learning and Teaching at SU, gave prospective students (Grade 9–12 learners) who attended SU's annual Open Day on Saturday (23 February 2019) a foretaste of what they can expect when they join the institution. He spoke to a group of learners and their parents at the SU Library on the Stellenbosch campus. They came from across South Africa and as far as Namibia to see what SU has to offer. Open Day activities were also held at the Tygerberg Campus. This year, 8 485 learners registered to attend the Open Day.
Some of the popular information sessions held at the Library focused on themes such as Suddenly you're grown up! – Are you prepared for life after Grade 12: What can you expect – and what will be expected of you?; Belong @ SU Living on campus – Living privately, Commuting to campus – will I ever belong and fit in?; Funding your studies and Tips for choosing a study programme. 
In his speech, Prof Schoonwinkel explained to learners and their parents why choosing SU would be a good decision.
“Year on year, Stellenbosch University attracts the best candidates from schools across the country because it's a good university. We value students and are committed to providing a transformative experience to each student."
He added that the University is really working hard to make people feel welcome at the institution. Prof Schoonwinkel emphasised SU's focus on inclusivity, transformation and diversity.
“We remain committed to diversity, multilingualism and transformation. Transformation is a strategic priority for the University.
“We celebrate diversity because it makes us stronger and makes SU a place where we can learn a lot from each other."
Prof Schoonwinkel said SU wanted to be accessible to students from all backgrounds and wanted to deliver comprehensive and quality support during their studies.
He added that the University wanted to offer young people the opportunity to play a key role in South Africa's future.
