"This publication reflects on our research activities that contribute to a transformed society and also highlights our commitment to human capital development and the excellent work of some of our research-focused academics."

This is how Prof Wim de Villiers, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU), describes the 2015 edition of Research at Stellenbosch University launched recently by SU's Division for Research Development.

This annual publication offers a glimpse of the innovative and interesting research being done at SU and serves a platform to share research results with the public. It also provides information about the university's rated researchers (as determined by the National Research Foundation), Distinguished Professors, Research Chairs and Centres of Excellence, as well as innovative technologies produced here.

"Research at Stellenbosch University provides the national and international research community as well as other interested parties with a comprehensive, yet accessible overview of research activities at our university," says Ms Maryke Hunter-Hüsselmann, Manager: Research Information and Strategy at SU and editor of the publication.

She adds that it also showcases the relevance and impact of SU's research in society and how it contributes to improving societal conditions.

Themed SU contributes to a transformed society through our research activities, the 2015 edition "shows instances where SU researchers were able to influence decision-making processes, where direct contributions were made to improve the lives of people, where innovative ideas have led to technological developments, and where new concepts have led to more sustainable practices," says Hunter-Hüsselmann.

She expressed her gratitude to researchers who contribute to this publication each year and said it is also a tribute to their hard work and their outstanding research output.

The previous editions of Research at Stellenbosch University (starting 2010) all won awards at the national Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Education (MACE) Awards Ceremony.
