SU alumni appointed to new cabinet

​Three alumni of Stellenbosch University (SU) have been appointed to South Africa's seventh administration.  

Ms Thembi Simelane was appointed as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development; Dr Leon Schreiber as Minister of Home Affairs and Dr Mimmy Gondwe as Deputy Minister of Higher Education. Simelane has been a member of the National Executive since 2021 and Schreiber and Gondwe since 2019. 

At SU, Simelane completed a postgraduate BPhil (Value Analysis and Policy Formulation) degree in 2001, while Schreiber completed a bachelor's degree in international studies as well as a BA honours and master's degree in political science at the University. Dr Gondwe obtained a Master of Laws and a Doctor of Laws at SU.  

Schreiber has been serving on the SU Council since April 2022, after being elected to Council by members of the SU Convocation.  

Prof Wim de Villiers, SU Rector and Vice-Chancellor, congratulated Simelane, Schreiber and Gondwe as well as the new Minister of Higher Education and wished them well in their new roles. 

  • Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, who was appointed as Minister of Higher Education, completed an executive education course from Stellenbosch Business School Executive Development in 2017.​
