Maties Basketball Coach Nathaly September retained the Western Cape basketball (BNL) title, alongside current student Dineo Fanampe, as well as alumni Lerato Ngakane and Dr. Corinne Moussi who received the MVP title.
"To have a team like the Western Cape Mountaineers is a great honour. These women have shown great fight throughout this 2023 season. To become the first back-to-back Champions wow we are grateful and very humbled. We appreciate all the support from the Western Cape. I'm happy to coach a team like this, it shows that I must be doing something right, just grateful, said Coach Nathaly.
“I was appointed as Maties Netball Head Coach in 2017. I recruited Nicola Smith and found Nichole Taljaard at Maties in her second year. They have flown the Maties Netball flag high for so many years and Nichole also won the Varsity Netball Player of the Year in 2022. Maties Netball won double gold in 2022 (USSA and Varsity Netball) with the help of Nichole and Nicola – making the Maties Netball family immensely proud.”
Zanela Mdodana, Maties Netball head coach said the national selection of our players speaks to our values and our culture that governs us and to who we are. “It is the foundation upon which we stand and build on. We are the Maroon Machine Magic. Thank you to Maties Sport for backing our vision for all these years. Our programme works. Better players but even better people.”
Not only did Coach Zanele produce two Spar Protea players, but she also formed part of the women-only production crew for SuperSport at the Netball World Cup where she was presenting and commentating.
