The Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) on 24 March 2023, considered allegations that on 4 November 2022:
A student picked up a multiple-choice sheet which was dropped by another student whilst writing the Economics 144 assessment. It was alleged that the student used multiple choice sheet of another student to answer his questions.
The misconduct is in contravention of rule 9.8, 10.1 and 10.2 of the Disciplinary Code for Students of Stellenbosch University (“the Code”).
The student denied the misconduct during an enquiry before the Central Disciplinary Committee (“the CDC”) which was held in terms of paragraph 37 of the Code. The CDC found the student guilty on balance of probabilities that he did use the multiple-choice sheet of another student to amend his answers. The student contravened the relevant sections in Disciplinary Code for Students of Stellenbosch University.
The CDC panel imposed the following sanctions:
- The student forfeits the module Economics 144.
- The student receives a suspended suspension of twelve (12) months on condition that the student is not found guilty of the same or similar misconduct for the duration of academic studies.
- The student must complete fifty (50) hours of community service which must be completed before the end of the 2023 academic year.
- The sanction must be published on the Faculty Notice Board with the student’s name redacted.
