Welcome to Stellenbosch University
Bursaries to allow students with outstanding fees to register

Dear students

Stellenbosch University (SU) is grateful to announce that we have been able to source funding for bursaries that will go to students that have been unable to register thus far due to outstanding fees.

With these bursaries all returning undergraduate students and postgraduate students who were on NSFAS funding previously and now have outstanding fees that prevent them from registering will be assisted.

With these bursaries SU is able to respond to two major challenges we faced at the start of the 2021 academic year:

  1. the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students' ability to function optimally in 2020 as far as their academics are concerned, and the University's decision not to exclude them; as well as
  2. the devastating impact of the pandemic on the economy and the household income of students due to job losses, salary cuts and other forms of hardship.

Awarding the bursaries will provide once-off support given the circumstances noted here and should not create the expectation of a precedent for subsequent years.

The University remains committed to work with the higher education sector towards finding systemic and sustainable solutions to the prevailing financial crisis that affects universities and access to higher education for our students.

As soon as the bursary funds have been paid into the respective student accounts, these students will be able to register either online or via e-mail or in person in Admin A. We hope to make this possible by end of business on Friday 19 March.

Self-registration can be done from any computer with access to the internet on www.maties.com. For more information, find the link to registration on www.sun.ac.za or please click here.

Students who experience any issue with the online registration process can contact the applicable faculty administrator/officer. Please click here and follow the link to the Registration Guide for contact details for faculty or programme specific information and services.

Individual students will receive communication on their bursary allocation for 2021 in due course.

Kind regards

Dr Ronel Retief
