Prof Gawie Botma is an associate professor in the Journalism Department of Stellenbosch University. He has published research articles and books on, amongst others, arts journalism, racism in the media and media polemics, and is currently focusing on early Cape colonial newspaper history and slavery. Until his appointment at SU in 2007, he was the arts editor and theatre critic of Die Burger in Cape Town.
Pearl Mamathuba is a forensic artist and has worked with the South African Police Service's (SAPS) Forensic Unit (Facial Identification). She has co-curated exhibitions at the Bag Factory Studio in the city of Johannesburg, and collaborated in group exhibitions such as “Zoo City" at the Constitution Hill Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa. She holds an MSc in Forensic Art and Facial Identification, which she completed in 2019 at the University of Dundee (Scotland). Her MSc research explored the effective use of face composite systems on African faces as compared to traditional (sketch) composites. Pearl is a Print Media lecturer, VIZ.Lab research fellow and PhD candidate in the Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University.
