The SANRAL Chair in Pavement Engineering is located in the Geotechnical and Transportation Division of the Department of Civil Engineering. The incumbent of this Chair (which is sponsored by the National Roads Agency), Prof Kim Jenkins, conducts his research within the Institute for Transport Technology. The pavement research group in the Department ​of Civil Engineering is currently undertaking projects in the fields of materials performance research, numerical modelling and sustainable practices. The research group has active international collaboration with the Technische Universiteit Delft (Netherlands) and Wuhan University (China), amongst others.
