Mainstreaming Gender for Energy Security in Poor Urban Environments, in short, Gender for Energy Security (GENS), is a Stellenbosch University Tier 1 Africa-UK Trilateral Research Chair, under the interim leadership of Prof Mark Swilling from the Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST). The GENS Trilateral Research Chair is in collaboration with Brunel University London (BUL), and the University of Nairobi (UoN). The Trilateral collaboration is funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa and the Newton Fund through the British Council. The objectives of the GENS Trilateral Chair is to co-generate gendered understanding on alternative energy technology and service options with energy poor women and other stakeholders and to co-design gendered innovations and explore commercialisation opportunities in alternative energy technology and services. Furthermore, the Trilateral Chair aims to facilitate multi-agency collaboration across government sectors and levels for an integrated gendered policy landscape in energy technology commercialisation and to build, enhance and support research capacity and collaborations and to advance the research on gendered energy innovations in urban poor environments. GENS is inspired to make a societal impact by having inter-and trans-disciplinary collaborations through engaging with both academic and non-academic stakeholders including city decision-makers, urban residents, industry, business, urban planning, design professionals and non-governmental organisations.
