The Department of Business Management or the Department of Business Economics as it was then known, was first established in 1924 with the appointment of Professor C.G.W. Schumann as senior lecturer.  Originally only two students enrolled – but this number of students has grown considerably to 112 in 1940, 415 in 1960, 962 in 1970 and 2009 in 1985. Today more than 8 000 students are enrolled for both undergraduate and post graduate courses. The Department is served by 27 full-time lecturers and five administrative staff members.

A wide range of activities are undertaken by the Department but the three traditional pillars of tertiary institutions namely teaching, research and social impact still form the core of what we do.

The programme offering of the Department can be divided into six focus areas namely Financial Management, Financial Planning, Investment Management, Marketing Management and Entrepreneurship/Innovation/Strategic Management and International Business. In 2004 a post-graduate diploma, in Marketing was introduced.

We regard ourselves as a learning organisation of which the fundamental purpose is to prepare students for constructive functioning in different spheres of business. This is made possible by well-qualified staff who are dedicated and committed to maintain the highest possible standards, both academically and administratively.
