Genetics
Welcome to Stellenbosch University

Research Facilities

The department has well equipped biotechnology laboratories and tissue culture facilities. A fully equipped laboratory is available to students on the honours course in genetics. The molecular section is especially well-equipped for studies on the identification of marker genes, mutations and useful genes (e.g. disease and insect resistance in plants).

The experimental farms of Stellenbosch University – Welgevallen and Mariendahl - are well equipped with green houses, growth chambers and experimental fields which are used for planting and evaluating plant breeding material. Experimental plot planters, harvesters and seed cleaning equipment are also available.

A computer laboratory equipped with 10 stations is used for interactive teaching (biometry, plant and animal breeding), and is available to all departmental post-graduate students and staff.

.

The Central Analytical Facilities (CAF) is housed in the same building as the department of Genetics and offers a wide range of services: DNA extractions, PCR reactions, SNP typing, dye terminator sequencing and next-generation sequencing
