1. Force and Pressure Measure System

3D Force plates

Bertec instrumented treadmill:

  • Housed at the Stellenbosch laboratory (permanently)
  • Research grade GRF data at rates of up to 3000 Hz
  • Incline adjustable (up to 15 degrees)
  • Top speed of 24km/h
  • Safety harness available
  • Dual belt enables forces to be measured on feet individually
  • Belts can be controlled individually to retrain or simulate asymmetric gait or perturb balance

Bertec floor-imbedded force plate system:

  • Research grade GRF data at rates of up to 3000 Hz
  • Triple-plate configuration enables capturing of both double support periods during the stance phase of gait (crucial for advanced biomechanical modelling)
  • Large middle plate (model: FP6090-15) and two peripheral plates (model: FP4060PT)

Pressure mapping platforms

Bertec floor-imbedded force plate system:

  • Research grade GRF data at rates of up to 3000 Hz
  • Triple-plate configuration enables capturing of both double support periods during the stance phase of gait (crucial for advanced biomechanical modelling)
  • Large middle plate (model: FP6090-15) and two peripheral plates (model: FP4060PT)
  • The two peripheral plates are portable and can be used outside of the laboratory

    Tekscan Matscan:
  • Research-grade data at rates of up to 440 Hz
  • Fully portable and used for foot analyses

2. 3D Motion Capture System

Our motion capture systems allo w us to track the movement of the human body at extremely high accuracies and speeds beyond the capabilities of video cameras and the naked eye. They also provide numerical data streams which allow deeper an alysis of musculoskeletal biomechanics when combined with other instruments such as force plates.

Optical systems

Camera-based systems employ stereophotogrammetry techniques to 'triangulate' the positions of markers mounted on the body from multiple views of the movement. This technology is the gold standard in motion capture.

Vicon Vantage V5 camera system:

  • Research grade marker tracking at up to 300Hz
  • Can capture large volumes with up an array of 10 cameras
  • High-end tripod system and advanced infrared strobes enable outdoor testing in full sunlight
  • 2 high-speed HD Bonita 720c video cameras (at up to 120 Hz)
  • Onboard camera sensors detect camera disturbances and provide intelligent feedback

3. Neurological Measures

EMG

Noraxon MyoMuscle DTS Desktop and Belt receiver systems:

  • Research-grade data at up to 3000Hz
  • Wireless wearable sensors with range of up to 30m
  • Full integration with HD video (Logitech Brio) or high-speed video (Noraxon Ninox) and wireless IMUs.
