The CSIR bursary programme financially supports full-time, unemployed students in obtaining qualifications in areas that are deemed a priority by the CSIR.

The bursary is open to academically qualifying young people and aims to attract and increase participation of women and black people in science, engineering and technology, specifically in the areas mentioned below:

Requirements

For a Masters and Doctoral bursary, applicants should be South African citizens who possess the following:

  • Good scientific writing skills;
  • Good organisational and time management skills;
  • Excellent academic record;
  • A drive to conduct research, self-motivation and the ability to work independently and within a team are essential;
  • The ability to formulate and carry out research;
  • Excellent technical abilities;
  • The ability to work well under pressure as part of a team and meet scheduled deliverables; Good communication skills both verbal and writing (e.g. with evidence of report and/or conference papers writing); and
  • Good report writing abilities.

Furthermore, the ideal candidate is an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual who takes ownership and initiative. He/she must also meet the entry requirements for Masters or PhD's bursary at the selected university.


Your Application must be accompanied by the following documents:

  • An updated CV;
  • A copy of your certified identity document; and
  • A copy of your latest academic record
  • For masters and doctoral applicants, proof of degree already completed must be included

CSIR InterBursary Support Programme
Call for 2024

Closing date: 31 August 2024

The CSIR and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) are pleased to announce the DSI CSIR Inter-bursary Support Programme (IBS) call for applications.

Late applications will not be considered.

The IBS postgraduate bursary support is intended in funding students approved for or registered for full time studies for Honours/Postgraduate Diploma, Masters or PhD degrees at any South African public university.

Eligibility

Students who are approved or registered for fulltime studies at any South African public university, who intend study for the following degrees:

  • Honours/postgraduate Diploma
  • Masters'
  • Doctoral

CSIR-DSI IBS applications are restricted to students whose degrees are aligned with the thematic research areas indicated below:

Value of the bursary award per annum
  • Honours/postgraduate Diploma: R130 000
  • Masters': R140 000
  • Doctoral: R16​0 000
  • Students will receive an additional once off laptop allowance of R10 000
