MPA & MA/MCom in PDM
The aim of this Programme is to develop and finish the knowledge and skills of students and mid-career public and development managers, who have already obtained an Honours degree in Public Administration/Public and Development Management, in a specific focus area of development, public management and policy management and to establish and promote independent research on issues to promote good governance in the local, provincial, national and regional public and development sectors. Enhancing advance skills in public management law is an additional goal.
Admission Requirements
- A BAHons/BAdminHons/HonsBCom/BEconHons in Public and Development Management, BHons in Public Administration and the Advanced Diploma in Public Administration
OR
- An Honours degree in Public and Development Management obtained at another university. An acceptable study record in the preceding programme is also required. An average of 65% in
the preceding programme is deemed to be acceptable, although other factors,
such as the mark obtained for the research component of the preceding
programme, may be considered if applicants attained at least 60% in the
preceding programme.
Assessment
The programme offers two options:
The student must, besides a course in appropriate Advanced Research Methodology and Academic Writing (if the student has not successfully completed such a course previously), complete a thesis of 120 credits under guidance of a senior academic. The thesis is then subjected to examination by the study leader, an internal examiner and an external examiner. The thesis must provide evidence of the candidate's ability to integrate existing data, information and knowledge in order to generate new knowledge and wisdom.
OR
Students need to choose three electives of 30 credits each in addition following an appropriate, advanced course in Research Methodology and Academic Writing Skills. Students must participate in a Capstone Laboratory where various activities are aimed at integrated assessment through an oral examination. In addition, the candidate must also complete a 90 credit thesis that is subjected to all the qualitative requirements of a thesis and a full examination by the study leader, an internal examiner and an external examiner.
A final mark of 50% is required to pass a module and a final mark of 75% to pass with distinction (cum laude). Accordingly an average final mark of 50% is required to pass the programme and an average final mark of 75% to pass with distinction (cum laude).
