Community Interaction

 

Academic staff of the Department of Animal Sciences is actively involved on all levels of the various animal production and related industries.  Academics frequently present talks at farmers' days, and serve on the editorial boards or management committees of various scientific journals, and industry-related bodies, respectively.

 

Prof CW Cruywagen is a member of the International Relations Committee of the American Dairy Sciences Association, and serves on the Milk Producers Organization Management Committee of the Western Cape Province, South Africa, and is a member of the South African Society for Animal Science. He also serves on the Editorial Committee of the South African Journal of Animal Science and is a member of various international committees. He is the current Vice-Chair and incoming Chair of the Agricultural Microscopy Division of the American Oil Chemists' Society, and serves on the International Relations Committee and the International Awards Committee of the American Dairy Science Association. He is also registered with the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists.

 

Ms Annelin Davids is the secretary of the Western Cape branch of the South African Society for Animal Science.

 

Prof. K Dzama is a panel member of the SADC Drought Monitoring Centre (Livestock Committee), convenor of the Animal Breeding and Genetics Forum, and serves on the South African Society of Animal Science Awards Committee. He also serves on the committee of the South African Red Meat Research and Development Trust Project, as well as the Professional Accreditation Committee of SACNASP. He further serves on the NAMC Red Meat project steering committee and is convenor of the Cape Town Urban Agriculture Forum.  Prof. Dzama is also a member of the International Foundation for Science (Sweden) research advisory panel; the convenor for the South African Breeding and Genetics Forum, a member of the Eastern Cape Pig Restocking Committee, as well as a member of the South African Society of Animal Science.

 

Prof. LC Hoffman is the chairperson of the Southern African Wildlife Management Association (member for life), and an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, and serves on the Editorial Board of Meat Science. Prof Hoffman is also a member of the South African Society for Animal Science.

 

Dr H Lambrechts is the chairperson of the Western Cape branch of the South African Society for Animal Science, and the secretary of the South African Reproductive Research Group. Dr Lambrechts serves on the Editorial Committee of the South African Journal of Animal Science. She is a member of the South African Society of Animal Science, the South African Wildlife Management Association, and the World Poultry Science Association's Working Group 13 (Ratites).

 

Dr Cletos Mapiye is a member of several professional organisations including South African Society of Animal Science (SASAS), Canadian Meat Science Association (CMSA), American Meat Science Association (ASMA), Canadian Society of Animal Science (CSAS), and American Society of Animal Science (ASAS), and the Grassland Society of Southern Africa (GASSA). Dr Mapiye serves as sub-editor of the South African Journal of Animal Science, guest sub-editor of Food Research International, and is also a reviewer for more than 20 international refereed Animal and Food Science journals.

 

Dr E Pieterse serves as Vice-chair of the Western Cape branch of the South African Society for Animal Science, and serves on the Faculty of AgriScience's Timetable Committee.

 

Dr Emiliano Raffrenato is a member of the American Dairy Science Association, the American Society of Animal Science, the European Association for Animal Production, and the South African Society of Animal Science. He also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Dairy Science, the South African Journal of Animal Science and for the Journal of Cereal Science. He is a panel member of the "Fibre Modelling Group", of the Cornell Nutrition Conference for Feed Manufactures. He is also part of the Research and Animal Ethics Committee at Stellenbosch University.
