XHOSA 318/348

Two semester ​​modules of 24 credits each, representing a continuation in progression of study of isiXhosa at second year level for second/third language (i.e. non-first language) students of isiXhosa. In addition to an extensive component of communication skills development, these modules focus on the study of isiXhosa linguistics, literature, language-related culture and (spoken and written) discourse analysis of isiXhosa, required by the future professions in which students will work as language teachers or practitioners.

This module is a continuation of Xhosa 214/244 and is designed for 2nd language speakers of isiXhosa.  It is composed of the following components:

  1.   Communication
  2.   Contemporary Culture
  3.   Syntax
  4.   Reading and Capstone Component

NB: Xhosa 318 (and 348) is a continuous assessment module, i.e. flexible modes of assessment e.g. orals, assignments, and tests.


XHOSA 328/258

Two semester modules of 24 credits each that focus on the study of isiXhosa by first (i.e. home) language students of isiXhosa. These modules include components of linguistics, literature, (spoken and written) discourse analysis (argumentation theory and humour), language-related culture and communication science study of isiXhosa students need for the future professions and occupations.

This module is a continuation of Xhosa 224/254 and is designed for 1st language speakers of isiXhosa. It is composed of the following components:

  1.   Literature
  2.   Culture
  3.   Pragmatics
  4.   Discourse analysis and Linguistics

NB: Xhosa 328 (and 358) is a continuous assessment module, i.e. flexible modes of assessments e.g. orals, assignments, and tests.​​​
