Introduction
Plagiarism can be a difficult topic for students, especially when they are expected to build on the work of other scholars in their field. Many find it challenging to create an original piece of work, while still relying on the research output of other scholars.
Broadly, the course covers:
- An overview of research integrity and ethical scientific writing.
- Practical exercises illustrating plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarizing by critically engaging with other scholarly work, by using correct paraphrasing and referencing techniques.
- The role of Turnitin and how to interpret a Turnitin similarity report.
The aim of the course is to:
- Increase postgraduates' awareness of the content in SU’s Policies on Plagiarism.
- Provide context for understanding what constitutes plagiarism within the academic world.
- Explain how to avoid plagiarism by applying principles of good academic writing.
- Teach the effective use of the software tool Turnitin.
Cost:
This course is available through the Postgraduate Office. There is no cost for registered SU postgraduates who sign up and attend.
