Grade 9 subject choice guidance

How does subject choice guidance fit into the career decision-making process?

There are various factors that play a role in the process of making a successful career choice. One of the first considerations is a realistic and informed subject choice for grades 10 to 12. A learner's subject choice can have significant implications in terms of a future career. Often, there is lack of understanding regarding the important considerations that contribute to making the correct subject choice. In order to support learners in their subject choice process, Stellenbosch University's Centre for Student Recruitment and Career Advice, offers professional subject choice guidance to grade 9 learners.

What does the service entail?

We offer appointments at our offices in Stellenbosch as well as online assessments.

An assessment at our offices includes a 4 hour psychometric assessment of personality, aptitude and interests, and a 1 hour individual feedback session, as well as a report of the results and recommendations to be emailed to you within 2 weeks of the assessment.

Testing starts at 08:30 until 12:30, and feedback is on the same day (14:00 – 15:00 / 15:15 – 16:15) in the afternoon. Recommendations are made based on the client's unique profile and can therefore include programmes at a variety of higher education institutions. This opportunity is offered to all prospective students and not only to those who wish to study at Stellenbosch University.

The process for an online assessment is the same as for an office appointment, except that our platform is MS Teams and we use the online versions of all the psychometric instruments. (Kindly note that most of the psychometric instruments are currently available in English only).

Cost of the service

The cost is R2350-00 per client (Monday to Friday)/ R 2900-00 per client (Saturday), payable within 48 hours after booking.  This fee applies to both office and online assessments.

We are currently running a special: R1900 per client (Monday to Friday) / R2450 per client (Saturday).

Subject choice discussion session for Grade 9 learners

The Centre for Student Recruitment and Career Advice (CSR) offers comprehensive subject choice assessments to grade 9 learners as part of an extended focus on preparing prospective students for tertiary training. The focus is on a careful matching of aptitudes, interests, and personality factors to potential tertiary options, so that the best subject choice can be recommended for the individual. This full assessment includes a 3-4 hour psychometric assessment session, a one-hour feedback session, and a full report. The fee for this full assessment is R2350.

The CSR is now expanding its efforts to support grade 9 learners in making subject choices by offering a grade 9 subject choice discussion session. This is available to learners who have consistently achieved an aggregate above 75% throughout grade 8 and grade 9 to date, and will involve the following:

  • The completion of two interest questionnaires
  • A one hour discussion session hosted by a psychologist at the CSR

The rationale behind the 75% aggregate requirement is that a consistently strong academic record can be considered confirmation of adequate academic ability, so that aptitude testing need to be an essential component of the assessment process.

The one-hour discussion is used to provide information about admission requirements for tertiary training programmes in areas relating to the candidate's interests, and to finalize a subject choice accordingly. No personality assessment is included. No report is sent after the process. The fee for this subject choice discussion session is R1100.
