Welcome to Stellenbosch University

Research Seminars

The department holds regular research seminars where visitors, staff and postgraduate students present current research. All of the research seminars are followed by refreshments in the Department and an opportunity to socialise.

Departmental research seminar

Local and international visitors as well as departmental staff present their current research at the Research Seminars. These are normally scheduled for alternate Tuesdays at 17h00 in the departmental library (Arts Building 332). The programme is uploaded at the beginning of each semester.

Doctoral seminar and postgraduate colloquium

The department holds regular postgraduate seminars where students present their work and receive feedback from other students and staff. PhD students are required to present a section of their work for discussion at the Doctoral Seminar, which usually happens monthly. The candidate's work is circulated in advance and the group of students and staff gather to discuss the work and deliver constructive feedback. Postgraduates at any level are encouraged to present their work at the Postgraduate Colloquium. The emphasis at the postgraduate seminars is on:

  • Fostering academic and social contact and support between postgraduate students in the Department of Ancient Studies.
  • Creating a postgraduate culture of discussion and debate.
  • Creating a culture of support and solidarity among postgraduates.
  • Providing an opportunity to share and discuss problems and insights.
  • Providing opportunities to test ideas in an unintimidating environment.

The programme is uploaded at the beginning of each semester.
