Ms Mmanape Hlungwane, a PhD student in the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch, has recently been awarded the coveted Mitacs Globalink Research Award. This award supports research collaboration between Canada and selected partner organisations in other countries. The South African National Research Foundation is one such partner.
The award will enable Mmanape to spend five months at the University of Montreal, Canada. Here she will do research under the supervision of Prof Marie-Claude L'Homme in the Department of Linguistics and Translation. This research on online subject field dictionaries in African languages will contribute to her PhD in Lexicography.
Mmanape completed three degrees at Wits before becoming a Matie. She enrolled for a PhD at Stellenbosch in 2021. She is investigating a model for an online Northern Sotho linguistics special field dictionary for higher education under the supervision of renowned lexicographer Prof Rufus Gouws.
