It is with deep sadness that the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences has to announce the sudden passing of Prof Johan Augustyn at his home in Sandbaai, after a heart attack.

Prof Augustyn was a Matie in the true sense of the word. Not only did he obtain his full tertiary education at Stellenbosch University – culminating in his PhD degree in 1978 – but he also worked as an academic at his alma mater during different stints from 1970 until his retirement in 2006.

During his time at Stellenbosch University, he was affiliated with the Department of Industrial Psychology (from 1970 - 2002) and then the Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management (from 2003 - 2006). A qualified industrial psychologist, Prof Johan also worked as an academic at Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg) and as senior manager in human resource management at Metropolitan Life/Metropolitan Holdings in the 1980s.

According to Mrs Vuyiseka Dubula-Majola, Director of the Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management, his work as lecturer, researcher and community activist didn't stop in 2006 when he officially retired. “His affiliation with the Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management – which he co-founded along with Prof Jan du Toit – kept him busier than ever during the last 15 years. As adjunct professor and then professor extraordinaire at the Africa Centre, Prof Augustyn was not only the institutional memory of the Africa Centre, but our wise and respected elder.

“He will be sorely missed."
