The Telematic Schools Project is a joint initiative of the Western Cape Education Department and Stellenbosch University to implement education through technology. The project started in 2009 as a pilot in 10 schools with five subjects and grew to 1 300 satellite schools with 15 subjects in both English and Afrikaans as language of instruction.

The Telematic Schools Project has evolved into a comprehensive online and real-time resource via which live lessons are broadcast to multiple channels. It provides access to lessons at any time through a zero-rated website that allows learners to access the videos without any data cost.

Learners are empowered to register themselves on the modernised website and work through the material in their own time.

The WCED and Stellenbosch University are constantly looking for ways to improve the project. The partnership and skills of both parties and the hard work of the teams involved make this a very cost-effective and high-impact project. The aim is for the project to make an even bigger difference going forward – expanding to include more subjects, potentially more grades, helping learners with study methods and psychosomatic issues, as well as expanding teacher professional development.

The WCED and Stellenbosch University made a commitment to help learners realise their potential. When the project started it was mainly to help underperforming and underprivileged schools. Although all schools have access to and are benefiting from the project, our aim is still to focus on making it accessible to those learners, whilst also assisting our top performers.
