Join us for the next Auxin session, where we explore generative artificial intelligence literacies in teaching, learning, and assessment (TLA) at Stellenbosch University (SU). The phrase “AI is a tool, not a source” has become a bit of a mantra in our communication around GenAI and TLA. But what exactly does it mean, and what are the practical implications of this assertion? In this session, we will discuss: • SU's guidelines for allowable AI use and our AI literacies framework. • Sticky topics such as AI bias and referencing AI tools. Throughout the conversation and with practical examples, we will highlight the distinction between using AI as a supportive tool versus relying on it as a source of information. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our TLA practices, understanding this distinction is crucial for maintaining academic integrity and enhancing the effectiveness of our work. Together, we can navigate this evolving landscape and become more comfortable with the not-so-new-anymore-kid on the TLA block.

Dalene Joubert is the new addition to the CTL advisors’ team at SU. She holds a joint Master's Degree from SU and the University of Leiden, a PGCE from Unisa and she is currently busy with her PhD in Translations Studies at SU. Dalene has a passion for learning and teaching and has been in the space for over a decade – she taught at both Rhodes University and SU and has also been a high school teacher. She loves her work and is currently exploring the intersection where AI, TLA, and SU meet. Hanelie Adendorff is a senior advisor in the CTL at SU. She has a PhD in chemistry but has been working in professional development since 2002. Her career and professional development started with an interest in blended learning, but she has since included work in the areas of assessment, facilitation of collaborative learning, science education, and more recently, the decolonization of the science curriculum. As a member of the Faculty of Science’s teaching and learning hub, she works with the Vice-Dean (Teaching and Learning) to enhance the status of teaching in the faculty.

isiXhosa:

i-AI sisixhobo, asingomthombo: i-GenAI yokufunda nokubhala kwiYunivesithi yaseStellebosch

Dibana nathi kumjikelo alandelayo we-Auxin apho siza kuphonononga ubuchule bobukrelekrele bokwenziwa kwemveliso kuvavanyo lokufundisa nokufunda kwiYunivesithi yaseStellenbosch (SU). Ibinzana elithi "AI sisixhobo, kungekhona umthombo" liliculo lwemihla ngemihla kunxibelelwano lwethu xakuthetwa neGenAI kunye novavanyo lokuFundisa-nokufunda. Kodwa lithetha ukuthini kanye kanye, kwaye zithini iimpembelelo ezisebenzayo zesi simangalo? Kulomjikelo ulandelayo we-Auxin, siza kuxoxa nge: Zikhokhelo ze-SU zosetyenziso oluvumelekileyo lwe-AI kunye nesakhelo sethu sokufunda nokubhala se-AI. Izihloko ezibuthathaka ezifana nenketho ebucala kwi-AI kunye nezixhobo ezibhekiselele ekwalathiseni nge-AI. Kuyo yonke incoko kunye nemizekelo ebonakalayo, siya kuqaqambisa umahluko phakathi kokusebenzisa i-AI njengesixhobo esixhasayo ngokuchasene nokuxhomekeka kuyo njengomthombo wolwazi. Njengoko i-AI isiya idityaniswa ngakumbi kwiinkqubo zethu zovavanyo, zokufundisa, nokufunda, ukuqonda lo mahluko kubalulekile ekugcineni intembeko kwizifundo kunye nokuphucula impumelelo yomsebenzi wethu. Sikunye, sinokujonga kulo mhlaba uvelayo kwaye sikhululeke ngakumbi ngomntwana ongamtshanga ekufundisweni nokufunda, novavanywa eyunivesithi.
