In the 2010s, human life increasingly migrated onto social media platforms. According to social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, this has had significant social, political and moral implications. The chaos, fragmentation and outrage that followed in an era Haidt calls “after Babel" is often exacerbated by new ways of generating, collecting and using (big) data. In this talk I consider how our ethical thinking and behaviour should respond “after Babel". Living “a good life" today may require the resurrection of old concepts like “civic virtue"; the cultivation of new virtues, including “digital temperance"; and, the promotion of ethical practices among data scientists.​
