Samuele Makoanyane (1909-1944)
The Stellenbosch University Museum invites you to a Wednesday Art Talkabout. Join us as we explore the delicate figurines made by a little-known sculptor born in 1909, Samuele Makoanyane. From his studio in Koalabata Village, Lesotho, in the 1930s, he produced exquisite low-fired clay figures.
In this exchange with his work, we will show how digital technologies enable us to acquire greater knowledge and insight into Makoanyane's practice. Through this technology we experience unique and detailed multiple perspectives of his sculpture. The exhibition will also include an original clay figure by Makoanyane - Woman Playing the Moropa Drum - and artworks, made “in conversation" with this piece, by students in the Department of Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University.
The panellists include Steven Sack, Stephen Wessels, Pusetso Nyabela,
Ledelle Moe and Charles Palm.
