The Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is famous for his images of impossible worlds and art based on repeating shapes. Although he claimed little formal understanding of Mathematics, his art is based on deep underlying mathematical ideas and structures which he grasped intuitively.
In this Science Café Stellenbosch talk, Florian Breuer will explain some of these surprising mathematical ideas which can be understood and appreciated by non-specialists.
More about the speaker
Prof Florian Breuer is a mathematician in SU's Department of Mathematical Sciences. He works in Number Theory, more specifically Arithmetic Geometry where he focuses on Elliptic curves, Drinfeld modules, Drinfeld modular forms and related topics. In his free time he is also an avid photographer.
Science Café
Stellenbosch is an initiative of
SU’s Faculty of Science to promote the public discussion of science matters in
