Stellenbosch University is a well-established institution that has an excellent record in all three of its core functions – research and innovation, learning and teaching, as well as social impact. Here we produce reliable and relevant knowledge, develop human potential, and forge meaningful partnerships with the rest of society. All of this makes SU a jewel in the crown of higher education in South Africa.
In order to maintain this level of performance, SU pursues an inspiring vision – to be Africa’s leading research-intensive university, globally recognised as excellent, inclusive and innovative, where we advance knowledge in service of society.
Around the world, universities are facing major challenges, and SU is no exception. How do we remain relevant amidst rapid change? How do we utilise new information technology, yet maintain academic excellence? How do we prepare our students for success in an uncertain future? How do we ensure our continued existence under trying economic circumstances?
We must be innovative and flexible in our approach, not only to survive but to flourish. Sustained transformation is essential for any university worth its salt and aiming to be sustainable.
Over a hundred years after our official inception in 1918, SU is once again on an exciting journey into the future. We are well placed to be an important meeting point between Africa and the rest of the world. For this we have the visionary leadership and the unselfish dedication of our predecessors to thank. Now we are resolutely moving forward together.
