The definition of Visual Redress at SU

To promote transformation in Higher Education, we have to move beyond policies and focus on implementing practical projects. At Stellenbosch University, this is exactly what we have committed to do. For us, transformation is an intentional and structured process of profound change of the University's places, people and programmes by means of intentional processes, practices, plans and policies. One such initiative is the visual redress project that is focused on changing the university's landscape in an attempt to right the wrongs of previous powers by removing hurtful symbols, social injustice and misrecognition, and remedying the harm that has been caused by these visual symbols by compensation through new visual symbols that have African centrality as an outcome.

Through the visual redress project, we have already named and renamed several buildings, commissioned art installations and placed a permanent statement as a reminder of where we were and where we are heading to. Welcome messages in 15 languages have been carved onto benches in public areas on campus, including braille, Sign Language and San. A map of Die Vlakte was installed at the entrance of the Arts and Social Sciences building which is built on the grounds where families were evicted under the Group Areas Act in the 1960's. Various other projects will be rolled out, and as we do this, we look forward to fostering an inclusive environment where people meet, talk, share ideas, and where identities and lifestyles are formed to enable diverse cultures to develop and flourish.
