Instrument: ZEISS MERLIN FE-SEM
Description: The AZTEC Software combined with the MERLIN FE-SEM allows for high-resolution images to be taken (using any preferred detector) across an entire section of the sample or even the entire sample if needed. This technique is wonderful for geological samples with large grains embedded in resin mounts but can also be useful fir biological or material samples where the fine details need to be visible over a large section of the sample. The montaged area can also be mapped using the BSD and EDX capabilities of the MERLIN FE-SEM to gain information of the chemical composition and distribution of the elements within the sample.
