On 8 March 2022 Prof Wim de Villiers appeared on SAfm, speaking with Songezo Mabece, a Stellenbosch University alumnus, about recent high-profile visits to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science’s Biomedical Research Institute (BMRI) where the new Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) is hosted.
Prof De Villiers highlighted the research capacity of CERI, not just relating to Covid-19, but also on diseases like HIV/Aids and Tuberculosis that continue to have a devastating impact on the African continent.
Amongst many other innovations, CERI will also be able to assist the South African Police Service with testing the backlog of DNA samples in gender-based violence cases.
