Published in May to commemorate Workers' Day, our annual #dayinthelife series spotlights our staff at Stellenbosch University (SU). This year, we highlight professional administrative support services staff who make a tangible difference in students' lives.
For Erik van Zyl, no two workdays are ever the same. Yet he wouldn't have it any other way. Working as a faculty administrator in the Dean's Division of the Faculty of AgriSciences, Van Zyl not only manages key academic processes, but also supports and guides students on their academic journey, from enrolment to graduation. An SU alumnus, Van Zyl tells us more about his role at SU.
What does your role at SU entail?
As a faculty administrator for AgriSciences, I have the privilege of supporting students throughout their entire academic journey – from their very first steps as undergraduates to the proud moment they walk across the graduation stage. Being part of this transformative process is incredibly rewarding, as I witness and support students' growth, perseverance, and ultimate joy when they achieve one of the most significant milestones in their lives.
My role extends beyond student support. I am actively involved in a range of administrative functions that help the Faculty run smoothly. These include participating in the selection process for academic programmes, assisting with the development and setup of curriculums, and serving as the secretariat for the Faculty Board.
It's a role that combines structure, service and purpose, and I am proud to be part of a team that helps shape the future of students at Stellenbosch University.
What does a typical day at work look like?
No two days in the life of a faculty administrator are ever the same. Each day presents new challenges, but also opportunities to have a meaningful impact. Whether it's meeting with students who seek academic advice, assisting with registrations, or engaging with prospective students and their parents, the role is both dynamic and people-focused.
Beyond face-to-face interactions, a significant portion of the day is dedicated to essential administrative tasks. From managing a steady flow of emails and answering phone calls, to ensuring that daily operations run smoothly, the work requires organisational skills and adaptability.
It's a fast-paced environment that demands attention to detail, clear communication, and a strong sense of purpose. Despite the challenges of the job, the reward lies in knowing that each task, big or small, contributes to the academic success and overall experience of our students.
How did your education or past experiences prepare you for this job?
My journey to academic administration began in AgriSciences. As an undergraduate student pursuing a BScAgric in Aquaculture, I developed not only a deep appreciation for the field, but also a strong connection to the academic environment and the people who supported me along the way.
While studying, I took on a role as a student assistant in Client Services. That experience laid the foundation for my understanding of student needs and the importance of efficient and empathetic support. It wasn't long before I transitioned into a full-time position as a Client Services agent, where I further developed my administrative skills and gained a broader view of the University's operations.
A few years later, I stepped into the role of faculty officer for Education, which offered new challenges and helped me grow my confidence and capability. Eventually, my path led me back to AgriSciences. It feels like a full-circle moment to be serving the very faculty where I started as a student. It's a reminder that every experience, no matter how small it may seem at the time, can be a stepping stone to something greater.
What do you enjoy most about your role and working at SU?
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is the opportunity to walk alongside students as they pursue their academic goals. Every day, I get to support, guide and motivate individuals who are working hard to turn their dreams into reality.
Whether I'm assisting with course selections, answering questions about academic policies, or simply offering a word of encouragement during a stressful time, I see firsthand how even small moments of support can make a big difference to a student's experience.
It's incredibly rewarding to watch students grow their confidence, develop their ability, overcome challenges, and eventually graduate. Knowing I played a part, however small, in that journey is what inspires me to give my best each day.
Ultimately, my job is about people. It's about listening, helping, and believing in students when they need it most.
Tell us something exciting about yourself that few people would expect.
During the day, I'm fully immersed in the world of academic administration. But after hours, things take a creative turn. I have a deep love of the arts, especially theatre. Whether I'm writing scripts, directing a show, or stepping into a character on stage, I find so much joy in storytelling and creative expression. It's energising, inspiring, and just a little bit dramatic (in the best way, of course).
I'm also passionate about garden and floral design. Plants are my therapy, and I'm always dreaming up ways to transform small spaces into lush, green hideaways. I jump at every opportunity to design floral arrangements for weddings and events. Combining colour, texture, drama and nature to create something is truly special.
These creative outlets fuel my work in administration – they keep me inspired and help me be adaptable and think outside the box. Because even in a structured environment, there's plenty of room for creativity, heart, and a touch of dramatic flair.
