AVReQ invites you to the second instalment of our seminar series, Critical Engagements with Histories of Whiteness. A series which interrogates the shifting meanings, privileges, and disciplining of whiteness across South Africa's past and present, while attending to its global resonances
Professor Neil Roos joins us for a seminar titled Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society: Social Histories of Accommodation, where he examines how working-class whites navigated and internalised apartheid. Drawing on personal and historical accounts, Roos explores how ordinary whites accommodated the system's racial hierarchies while claiming distance from its ideology, revealing the everyday complicities that upheld apartheid from below.
