​​Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, the SARChI Chair for Violent Histories and Historical Trauma and the Founding Director of the Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest (AVReQ) and the Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest (AVReQ) are honoured to extend an invitation to the 2024 Stellenbosch University Vice-Chancellor's Annual Lecture to be delivered by Professor Mosa Moshabela, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Cape Town.

  • The in-person event is to be held at 17:00 in the SU Museum, 52 Ryneveld Street on Monday, 26 August 2024.

This series of lectures is jointly coordinated by AVReQ and the SU Centre for Collaboration in Africa (CCA) and hosted by the SU Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wim de Villiers.

The Vice-Chancellor's Annual Lecture Series, since its inception in 2018, has been a crucial platform for fostering public conversations that deepen our understanding of the university's role in contemporary and challenging times.

As distinguished speaker, Prof Moshabela will deliver a lecture titled Cooperation is the New Competition: The Future of Sustainable Higher Education in South Africa."

“The message of collaboration that Prof Moshabela brings to the higher education sector is a necessity," says Prof Gobodo-Madikizela. “We are hoping that the conversations that will emerge from his lecture will bring our institutions together to imagine new partnerships that will advance student research, curricular offerings, and knowledge production and create new opportunities for growth rather than competition between our institutions."

The Vice-Chancellor's Annual Lecture Series has featured eminent scholars, writers, public intellectuals, artists, and scientists, including Prof Gabeba Baderoon, Prof Jonathan Jansen, Judge Thina Siwendu, and Dr Chidi Chike Achebe. The primary objectives of the lecture series are to facilitate knowledge exchange, stimulate critical thinking, and promote interdisciplinary dialogue on pressing issues facing Africa and the global community. It aims to enrich the academic environment at Stellenbosch University, promote research excellence, and serve as a vehicle for public engagement and knowledge dissemination beyond the academic sphere.​

More about Professor Mosa Moshabela

Prof Mosa Moshabela is the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Cape Town and Chairperson of the Governing Board of the National Research Foundation. Until recently, he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Health in the Academy of Science of South Africa. Prof Moshabela is a former member of the Board of the South African Medical Research Council; the Lancet Commission on Synergies between Health Promotion, Universal Healthcare Access, and Global Health Security, and the Commission of the US National Academies for Science, Engineering, and Medicine on the Global Roadmap to Healthy Longevity. As a South African leader in higher education, Prof Moshabela is promoting notions of Brain Circulation over Brain Drain and Cooperation over Competition.​
