The Department of Microbiology at Stellenbosch University has developed a short course in soil microbiology. The “Soil microbiology in agriculture" course will take place on 6 to 7 July and again from 9 to 10 November 2023 on the SU campus. The aim of the course is to familiarise attendees with the complex world of the soil microbiome. It will comprise of both lectures and a hands-on laboratory session. Topics include a brief introduction to microbiology, the role of microorganisms in soil, the use and misuse of microbes in soil, and management practices that influence microbes. In the lab session, we will look at important species in agriculture and how to assess biodiversity and function.
