The popular Science Winter Week for Grade 11 learners, hosted annually by Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Science, will this year be presented online from 13 to 15 July 2021.
The aim of the Science Winter Week is to expose Grade 11 learners to degree programmes and career options in the natural sciences. The Faculty offers programmes in the fields of microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry, to earth sciences, mathematics, physiological sciences, applied mathematics, computer science, physics and botany and zoology.
“Learners are often not aware of the many opportunities available in the natural sciences context. They, and their parents, are mostly only familiar with careers in engineering, medicine, law and education. In the meantime, there are a range of study fields and career options in the biological, mathematical and physical sciences," says Mariétta van den Worm, Director of Faculty Management at SU's Faculty of Science.
During the Science Winter Week, learners will have the opportunity to engage directly with lecturers and postgraduate students in these fields. From 13 to 15 July, learners can join an MSTeams meeting every day from 11:00-13:00 for an interactive session, free of charge.
“We are sorry not to be able to host the learners on our beautiful campus for the week," says Maambele Khosa, recruitment officer for the Faculty of Science and also a BSc-graduate. “But on the other hand going online with the event means we are able to reach out to learners from all over South Africa," she adds.
