At the heart of UNESCO Story Circles is the concept of oral traditions.
Throughout history, cultures around the world have used storytelling as a way
to pass down knowledge, values, and traditions from one generation to another.
UNESCO Story Circles invite individuals from diverse backgrounds to share their
stories, experiences, and backgrounds. By practising listening for
understaning through listening to each other's narratives, participants not
only gain a deeper appreciation for different perspectives but also cultivate
empathy and mutual respect.
One of the key features of Story Circles is their inclusivity. Participants are
encouraged to share stories that reflect their unique identities, backgrounds,
and experiences. This is unique from other methods, as it is each individual’s
own story or narrative that are shared from their perspective. Even though
these stories are personal, it often shows participants the common threads that
connect us all.
Another important aspect of UNESCO Story Circles is the emphasis
on listening for understanding. Participants not only share their own
stories but also listen attentively to the stories of others. This practice
promotes empathy, compassion, and cross-cultural understanding as individuals
engage with perspectives that may be different from their own.
UNESCO Story Circles can take place in various settings, from small groups to
large gatherings, and from conference rooms to under a tree, or even online.
Through the work of the UNESCO Chair the past few months we have facilitated
multiple Story Circles.
We have seen how the UNESCO Story Circles are a powerful tool for promoting
this cross-cultural dialogue, fostering empathy, and also learning about
oneself.
