In collaboration with the Department of Practical Theology at the Faculty of Theology, Ekklesia offers a two year MTh programme that focuses on missional congregations and transformative leadership. The course combines rigorous academic work with a strong focus on pastoral practice.

The programme aims to build missional leadership capacity through reading, vigorous theological dialogue, participation in spiritual disciplines, experimentation with missional leadership challenges and personal reflection (journaling) and direction.

The focus and content of the different modules are based on research done in congregations of the Partnership for Missional Churches in Southern Africa (SAPMC).

The two focus areas:

Missional Leadership and Ministry - intended to serve as a learning community for pastors and congregational leaders who want to build their missional and ministerial leadership capacity.
Missional Spiritual Formation -  will deepen the participants' spirituality and help students gain the necessary insights and skills for missional spiritual formation and direction in ministry and mission

Topics addressed in the MTh Programme:
• Congregational ministry and spiritual formation
• Rethinking our faith: The Gospel, Missio Dei and the Triune God
• Pastoral care, spirituality and discipleship
• Leading God’s people (in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch Business School)
• Historical and contemporary practices in spiritual direction and community formation
• Missiology and missional spirituality for the building of Kingdom communities

The programme will be presented by lecturers of the Faculty of Theology and accredited research fellows who are recognised as practitioners in their respective fields. They include Profs Nadine Bowers-du Toit, Reggie Nel, Ian Nell, Drs Mags Black, Coenie Burger, Lisel Joubert, Frederick Marais, Sipho Mahokoto, Tom Smith and Revds Ralph Afghan, Marie Britz, Dawid Mouton, Ankia du Plooy and Euodia Volanie.

Up to 10 applicants are selected each year – usually presenting an ecumenical diversity. The course is structured in six contact weeks (modules) over two years. Each module focuses on a specific core missional or spiritual capacity. Students prepare for contact weeks by reading prescribed material and applying the knowledge to assigned tasks or disciplines in their congregations or ministries.
