Qualitative Researcher: SU-IRG

Host: SU Immunology Research Group, Division of Immunology, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University.

Job Grade: 9.1

Duration: One-year contract with potential for extension.​ Earliest start date from 1 August 2024

Scope of Research: The Stellenbosch University Immunology Research Group is situated on the Tygerberg Campus of Stellenbosch University and conducts mainly Tuberculosis research. We recruit participants for our research studies from the communities surrounding Tygerberg, Drakenstein, and the West Coast.

Duties: Assist with the design and implementation of a qualitative study to evaluate the attitudes, opinions and experiences of health care staff, patients and close contacts regarding the use of sequencing to guide prevention and surveillance of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis

  • Assist with development of interview and focus group discussion guides. 
  • Conduct face-to-face interviews and assist with focus groups discussions 
  • Perform qualitative data analyses 
  • Write up scientific articles 
  • Ensure project deliverables and deadlines are met. 
  • Organise and participate in stakeholder meetings. 
  • Liaise with research sites, stakeholders and health agencies in the Drakenstein and Western Districts of the Western Cape. 
  • Assist with various administrative tasks related to the study, including drafting of study-related documents, standard operating procedures and funder reports. 

Job Requirements:

  • At minimum, a bachelor degree in a field relevant to qualitative research 
  • Experience in conducting interviews and qualitative research analysis. 
  • The ability to solve problems independently and effectively. 
  • Driver’s license and willingness to drive independently 
  • A goal-oriented disposition. 
  • Computer literacy (MS Outlook, Word and Social Science plaforms). 
  • Sound interpersonal skills 
  • Good written and oral communication skills. 
  • Fluency in at least two of the following languages: Afrikaans, isiXhosa or English 

Recommendations:

  • This work can be toward a PhD degree, but this is not a requirement 
  • A Master’s degree in qualitative research 
  • Research experience in the public health sector 
  • Experience in facilitating community-based training. 
  • Own transport
