​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The School for Data Science and Computational Thinking at Stellenbosch University, launched in July 2019, is a world class institution in data science and computational thinking, driving impactful work in and for Africa. We build interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and teaching programs that tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing our country, continent, and the world. ​​

Through partnerships with external organizations, the School is home to various leading centers and labs, including the Cen​tre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI), the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA), and the Policy Innovation Lab. Industry-sponsored chairs, such as the Standard Bank Lab for Recommender Systems and the Capitec Chair in Applied AI, further enhance our capacity for innovation.

Our researchers regularly publish in prestigious journals like Nature, Science, Cell, and Quantum Machine Learning, and have received numerous accolades, including being named among the Times Top 100 Most Influential People of 2022, the Order of Merit Medal from the Portuguese Government, and the Cavaliere of the Ordine della Stella d’Italia (Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy). SACEMA has also been recognized with the prestigious NRF Societal Impact Award.​
