Partnership Opportunity: Jet Education Services (Jala Peo initiative) - Hydroponics/Aquaponics system at Steilhoogte primary school as part of Jala Peo West Coast school food garden project
The primary school has a well established school food garden in a netted area that produces food to supplement school nutrition programme. In addition to this supplementation the school has also secured sponsors to supplement programme with meals throughout school holidays.
They have recently established a larger open air garden to ensure greater production for sales and thus sustainability of school food gardening and also to create opportunities for learners and parents to gain skills on preserving fresh produce via bottling, etc.
This school has also been identified as a school in the Western Cape to manage a nursery to provide other Western Cape schools with seedlings because of evidence of good stewardship with projects.
A hydroponics/Aquaponics system at the primary school will enhance possibilities of the school food garden in an arid area as pilot to see whether other schools could follow if proven effective. Limited resources in terms of water is significant obstacle to school food gardens in the West Coast area. More info...
