Chinese Proficiency Test

 (HSK, HSKK) July 2025 

​1. What Are These Tests?

The HSK (汉语水平考试 Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is a globally recognized Mandarin proficiency test for non-native speakers. It assesses your ability to listen, read, and write in Chinese.

The HSKK (汉语水平口语考试 Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǒuyǔ Kǎoshì) is the oral version of the test and evaluates your spoken Chinese.

Both tests are useful for:

  • Applying for scholarships in China
  • Admission to Chinese universities
  • Career and professional development
  • ​Measuring your language progress

 

​​2. Upcoming Test Date:

  • Test Date: Saturday, 19 July 2025
  • Registration Opens: 20 May 2025
  • Registration Deadline: 16 June 2025 
  • Payment Deadline: 21 June 2025 at 12:00 noon
  • Results Release: About 40 days after the test. You'll be notified via WhatsApp/email when your certificate is ready for collection.

 

3. What Levels Can I Take?

3.1 HSK (Written Test):
Choose the level that matches your current Chinese skills.

HSK 1 – R150 (40 mins)

HSK 2 – R250 (55 mins)

HSK 3 – R350 (90 mins)

HSK 4 – R450 (105 mins)

HSK 5 – R550 (125 mins)

HSK 6 – R650 (140 mins)

 

3.2 HSKK (Speaking Test):
Choose based on your speaking ability.
Beginner – R200

Intermediate – R300

Advanced – R400


How to Register?

​1.20 May 2025, go to the official Chinese Test Service Websitehttps://www.chinesetest.cn/

2.Create an account and complete the application form.

3.Enter your full name exactly as it appears on your ID or passport.

4.Upload a passport-style photo (head and shoulders, clear background).

5.Join the HSK WhatsApp group here for important updates and test venue details.

6.Once registration is successful, make payment to Stellenbosch University by 21 June 2025 at 12:00 noon and not to the Chinese Test Service website.

    FAQ

    ​❓ What if I get sick on the test day?
  • You may apply for a cancellation with medical proof (e.g. a doctor's note).
  • In such cases, we can help submit a request to the Chinese Test Service platform. However, refunds are not guaranteed and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

❓ Can I transfer my test fee to the next test date?  No. Test fees are non-transferable to another test date or another person.


​      ❓ Can I change my test level or type after registering?
  • Yes, but only before the registration deadline.
  • Email cisu@sun.ac.za with your updated test details and full name.
  • After the deadline, no changes to test type, level, or time can be made.

     

    ❓ Can I cancel my HSK or HSKK registration?
    Yes, but please note the following:
  • Cancellations must be made before the registration deadline (in this case: 21 June 2025 at 12:00 PM).
  • To cancel, email cisu@sun.ac.za with the subject: HSK Cancellation – [Your Full Name]
  • Include your test level, test type, and HSK account email in your message.


Specialized Funding for Study in China in the 2025 Academic Year: Opportunities Available at Over 289 Universities

​1.1. Chinese Government Scholarship Program

The Chinese government provides substantial funding for various levels of study, from Chinese language learning to doctoral programs. For Chinese language learners and undergraduate students, the annual funding is approximately RMB 60,000. Master's students can receive around RMB 70,000 to 80,000 per year, while doctoral students may receive about RMB 88,000 to 100,000 annually.​

1.1.1 Research Areas and Topics​:
The covered fields are extensive and include Chinese language studies, biotechnology, agriculture, computer science, environment and climate change, engineering sciences, food science, hydrogeological engineering, marine studies, natural and physical sciences, nuclear and renewable energy, space science and technology, as well as telecommunications.​

1.1.2 Application Requirements:
Applicants must be South African citizens in good health and hold a National Senior Certificate (NSC). They should be committed to the development of South Africa. Applicants are expected to demonstrate an interest in China, and have an NSC score of at least 65%. Preference will be given to those with a high school diploma, and some programs do not require a background in Chinese language studies.​

1.1.3 Language of Instruction:
The language of instruction varies by program. Undergraduate courses are taught entirely in Chinese, requiring bachelor’s degree applicants to have at least HSK Level 4. Master’s and doctoral programs are taught in both English and Chinese. It is recommended to check the availability of language courses.​

1.1.4 Chinese Language Proficiency​
For those looking to improve their language skills, both South Africa and China offer Mandarin courses. These courses cater to different levels, from beginner to advanced learners.​

1.2. International Chinese Language Teacher Program (Xiamen University)​:

These program options include a range of offerings, from international Chinese language education to undergraduate degrees, and even a “2+2 Joint Training” undergraduate program. Application requirements vary depending on the chosen program but generally include HSK scores and the National Senior Certificate.

1.3. Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University

The Confucius Institute offers public learning opportunities for students from all backgrounds. Here, you can learn Mandarin for free, win prizes, and even apply for comprehensive programs.
