Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine (DiSEM)

The Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine (DiSEM) aims to lead the sport and exercise medicine field through the translational use of impactful research, teaching and learning, and clinical service provision to enhance our social impact and the quality of life in the societies we serve.

DiSEM sits in the Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, and offers an MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine and a full thesis-based MSc and PhD programme.

Our research is focused into three main platforms:
  • Exercise and Lifestyle for the Prevention and Management of Chronic Disease (in low resourced environments as well as in university and other settings)
  • Injury and Illness Surveillance in both conventional and adapted sport
  • Growth and maturation in youth sport
The Division provides clinical sport and exercise medicine services to athletes, both recreational and professional, within the public and private sector, and assist teams and sports academies in providing field side and sport-specific clinical services.
