The SSML is a physical environment based at the Civil Engineering Department of Stellenbosch University that enables the study of ITS. The area provides space for undergraduate and postgraduate students conducting research in transportation engineering and ITS applications. The area is shared by students working on transportation issues from multiple disciplines, include Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Industrial Engineering. Our students also represent a range of interest areas, ranging from transport safety, traffic engineering and systems engineering to computer programming and electronic development. This encourages interdisciplinary research interaction among our students and their study leaders.

The research facilities at the SSML are primarily sponsored by our Industry Partners. These include:

  • A traffic signal installation, with signal heads and signal controller
  • A video wall with link to the Sanral Cape Town Freeway Management System (FMS)
  • Microsimulation software VISSIM  and macrosimulation software VISUM
  • Link to the TomTom historic and live data portals for access to Probe Data
