Lilian Dudley is a Principle Specialist in Public Health and heads the Health Systems and Services Research Unit in the Faculty. Prior to her appointment at SU, she was the CEO of Health Systems Trust (HST), and spent many years as a senior manager of health services in local government and Provincial Health Departments. Her particular areas of interest are health systems and services research (organisation of service delivery) and health leadership and management.

Sydney Carstens completed his undergraduate medical studies at Stellenbosch University in 1983. This was followed by a MMed in Community Health at the University of Stellenbosch in 1990. He worked as Deputy Medical officer of Health for Port Elizabeth Municipality (now Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality) until 2004. Sydney joined Stellenbosch University in 1995, as registered specialist in Community Health, and later changed his registered specialty to Occupational Medicine in 2006. His main interests in Occupational Medicine lie in the fields of occupational health worker training and functional impairment in the work place.

Jo Barnes has degrees in Mathematics, Epidemiology and Community Health. Her major research interests are water-related diseases, water pollution, housing and sanitation, especially in low-income areas. She has extensive knowledge of the river water quality in the area as well as pollution sources. Dr Barnes is a recipient of the Order of the Disa in 2007 for meritorious services to the Province of the Western Cape, winner of the Women in Water, Sanitation and Forestry Award 2007 for the category Education and Awareness for awareness created on contamination of rivers, winner of the Cape Times/Caltex Environmental Award 2005 for the research work on contaminations of rivers and recipient of the Faculty of Health Sciences Award for Community Service for 2007.

Taryn Young is Director of the Centre for Evidence-based Health Care www.sun.ac.za/cebhcc
and coordinator of the MSc in Clinical Epidemiology www.sun.ac.za/clinepi at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University and consultant to the South African Cochrane Centre. She is an epidemiologist with a specialist degree in Public health and considerable expertise in the field of evidence‐based health care.

Professor Charles Wiysonge is a specialist in evidence-based health care and vaccinology. His research interests include childhood immunisation, systematic reviews, and knowledge translation. He previously worked for the Government of Cameroon, Pasteur Institute of Cameroon, World Health Organization (WHO), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), South African Cochrane Centre, and the University of Cape Town. Professor Wiysonge serves on various international advisory committees, including the WHO African Task Force on Immunisation; the WHO African Regional Committee on Health Research and Development; the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) Independent Review Committee; and the steering committee of the GREAT (Guideline‐driven, Research priorities, Evidence synthesis, Application of evidence, and Transfer of knowledge) Network. In July 2015 he was appointed by the WHO Director General as a member of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE). Professor Wiysonge was knighted by the Presidency of Cameroon with the National Order of Valour, the highest honour in Cameroon, in the category “Chevalier".

Jack Meintjes is the Head of the Unit for Infection Prevention and Control (UIPC). He as a specialist in Occupational Medicine, with special interest in biological risk factors and the effect these have on health care workers and patients. His other interests include pressure as physical risk factor and he has a passion for the maritime environment. He serves on a number of national and international committees related to infection prevention and control, as well as diving and hyperbaric work.

Dr Hassan Mahomed

Dr Hassan Mahomed is a Public Health Specialist at the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health and the Division of Community Health at Stellenbosch University. He is responsible for the domain of Quality of Care at the Province and is developing quality of care as a research area. He is an author/ co-author on 55 scientific publications. He has previously worked for the University of Cape Town doing research on tuberculosis vaccines, and for the City of Cape Town as an epidemiologist.

Lungiswa Nkonki is a Senior Scientist who completed her PhD in Health Economics at the University of Bergen in 2012. Her doctoral dissertation title was "Health systems challenges in South Africa: Effective and equitable delivery of interventions to improve infant feeding and reduce mother to child transmission of HIV". Her research interests include economic evaluations of healthcare programmes, measuring inequality in health outcomes, and understanding the determinants of attrition/retention of lay health workers.

Fidele Kanyimbu Mukinda is a Lecturer in the Health System and Services Research (HSSR) Unit Division of Community Health at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University. He completed his undergraduate medical studies (BSc and MBChB) at the University of Lubumbashi in DR Congo followed by an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology (2010) at Stellenbosch University. His research interests include HSSR, Infectious Diseases, Quality of Care and Medical Education.

Donald Skinner is the Director of Research on Health and Society, a research unit with the Division of Community Health. Donald Skinner and RHS do research on the social aspects of health with particular emphasis on HIV, substance use, violence and TB. He has a strong interest in qualitative and community based participatory research.
