| Prof Oliver C. Ruppel; Department of Mercantile Law, Faculty of Law Contact: ruppel@sun.ac.za Prof Oliver C. Ruppel specialises in International Economic Law, Environmental Law, SADC Law and Public International Law. He coordinates and teaches the LL M modules “Aspects of Environmental Law” and “Legal Aspects of World and Regional Trade”. He is the Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) for Africa of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Working Group II, which is housed at Stanford University (USA); a Regional Resource Person on Trade and Environment in Sub-Saharan Africa to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) (Switzerland); and a Visiting Professor at various institutions worldwide. He was the founding WTO Chair holder and Director of the Human Rights and Documentation Centre at the Faculty of Law, University of Namibia, where he served until 2010. He is also a founding member of the United Nations Environmental Programme’s (UNEP) Association of Environmental Law Lecturers in African Universities (ASSELLAU), Nairobi (Kenya); and a member of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, Ottawa (Canada) and a member of the Editorial Board of the NIELS Journal of Environmental Law at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Lagos (Nigeria). | Prof Thinus Booyesen; Department Electrical and Electronic EngineeringHe is a Member of the Institution of Engineering Technology (MIET), a Chartered Engineer (CEng) at the Engineering Council (UK), and a Professional Engineer (PrEng) with the Engineering Council (SA). He has over ten years’ international industry experience in the aerospace and automotive industries with companies that include SunSpace, Rolls-Royce, Boeing, BMW, and Jaguar Land Rover. He has been with Stellenbosch University from 2009 and his research is on the Internet of Things, with a focus on Smart Water and Electricity metering and Intelligent Transport Systems (specifically its application in the informal public transport industry in Sub-Saharan Africa). He is also a managing director of Bridgiot, and co-creator of Geasy (www.geasy.co.za) |

The Division engages these diverse groups to work with the university and matches the needs of the society with university research in order to deliver excellent research that is relevant to local communities, and creates innovative solutions that changes the way we work and live. The DCI works with external stakeholders in a number of ways, formally and informally, through Memoranda of Understanding (MOU's); Research Agreements; and Community Engagement Forums. The Division provides capacity building workshops and short courses for our academics and graduate students who often engage or intend to engage in Community-Based Research. It maintains a Community Research Needs listing for academics and students who wish to pursue research with local communities, and also manages internal and external incentives for engaged research. |
