Funding opportunities

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Division for Social Impact

The Division for Social Impact provides modest seed funding for initiatives that align or respond to SU themes​. The purpose of this seed funding is to support Social Impact initiatives that cannot be financed by means of normal funding mechanisms. It provides start-up capital and is not meant to cover normal running costs or subsidise existing programmes. View the comprehensive DSI funding criteria ​and Evaluative Framework 2024​. There are normally two funding opportunities per year and the dates for 2024 are as follows:-

Development & Alumni Relations Office

The Development & Alumni Relations Office​ will assist with the funding of initiatives that comply with certain criteria.

​Funding Calls

​Periodically, the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC), City of Cape Town (CCT), Western Cape Government (WCG) and National Research Foundation (NRF) put out calls for funding for Social Impact initiatives. They will be displayed here when they are available.

Researchers are invited to submit proposals on the relevant templates attached.

Appendix 1 – Single institutional projects, where up to R50 000 can be allocated for a collaboration between a university and the City of Cape Town.

Please note:

Deadline for requesting assistance with connections with CCT departments and officials is 14 July 2023.

Selected proposals will be reviewed by members of the CHEC-CCT Standing Committee. Researchers may be invited to present their research proposals to the CHEC-CCT standing committee on Friday 11th August 2023. Formal approval will take place at a meeting to be held soon after 16 August 2023, after which all applications will be notified of the outcome.

Engaged Research Fund 2023-24

​The Talloires Network of Engaged Universities (TN) and Open Society University Network (OSUN ) invite applications for funding and research support for graduate students and faculty at OSUN and TN partner institutions who are working to develop long-term, sustainable community partnerships as a central part of their research. 

The Fund is only open to faculty members and graduate students at TN and OSUN member institutions.

The Engaged Scholar Award (ESA) is for graduate students pursuing research that integrates community engagement into new or existing scholarship. Award: $6,000.

The Engaged Faculty Scholar Award (EFSA) is for faculty whose scholarship incorporates community-based research into new or existing research and support sustained community partners as long-term collaborators. Award: $9,000.

In addition to the financial support, this is an opportunity to join a growing global community of practice of engaged researchers through the joint TN-OSUN effort, “Amplifying the Voices of Engaged Researchers Around the World"
