Department of Political Science (Mil)

The Department of Political Science (Mil) supports teaching, research, and engagement on the diverse forces shaping contemporary politics and security.

Modules taught by the Department are compulsory in the first two years of the BMil in Security and Africa Studies, a three-year undergraduate degree programme. Through military-contextualised higher education we present introductory courses to the academic discipline of Political Science, including International Relations, Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, African Studies, and Civil Military Relations. Students may also choose to major in the subject by completing Political Science electives in their third year on African Political Thought and Political Economy.

The Department also presents modules at the Postgraduate level in the Honours in Security and Africa Studies programme. We present research-led teaching and learning on International Relations Theory, and on South Africa's political and military relations in Africa. Modules on Geopolitics and African Security, and on Defence and International Politics, are at the centre of the Postgraduate Diploma in Defence Studies and the MPhil in Defence Studies respectively.

Research in the Department may be done towards a Master's degree, either through coursework or a full thesis. Research towards a PhD in Military Studies can also be supervised by members of the Department.
