XHOSA 214 / 244
The modules Xhosa 214, 244 are two semester modules of 16 credits each at second year level of BA degree study for second/third language students of isiXhosa ( i.e . students who did
not have isiXhosa home language as matric subject ) . These modules contain extensive components for communication skills development in isiXhosa (as a progression of first year study) in addition to components directed at reading of authentic media (e.g. magazine) texts in isiXhosa for understanding culture, Students development meta-linguistic awareness and knowledge of the isiXhosa linguistic system, required for work in students' future professions and occupations.
This module is designed for second/additional language speakers of isiXhosa and it is composed of the following modules:
- Syntax
- Reading and writing
- Speaking and listening
- Xhosa culture component
NB: Xhosa 214 (and 244) is a continuous assessment module, i.e. flexible modes of assessment e.g. orals, assignments, and tests.
XHOSA 224/254
Two semester modules of 16 credits each focused on the study of isiXhosa as continuation in progression from Xhosa for first (home) language students who had isiXhosa home language as matric subject, or students who have an advanced-level proficiency in isiXhosa. These modules include components of study of the linguistics, literature, language-related (inter-)cultural study (spoken and written) discourse analysis, including media texts, and communication science of isiXhosa to equip students with a range of skills required by language teachers and practitioners, relating to isiXhosa language and communication services.
This module is designed for 1st language speakers of isiXhosa and is composed of the following modules:
- Communication
- Literature
- Culture
- Media Study
- Sociolinguistics
NB: Xhosa 224 (and 254) is a continuous module, i.e. flexible modes of assessment e.g. orals, assignments, and tests
