About us

The Confucius Institute is a non-profit public institution that aims to promote Chinese language and culture. Following the successes of Germany, France, Spain and the UK to promote their national languages, China decided in 2004 to do the same by establishing Confucius Institutes all over the globe, and headquarters in Beijing, China. The Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University is located in Stellenbosch University International (SU International).

It is important to distinguish between the courses and services offered by the Confucius Institute (as non credit-bearing) and those offered by Stellenbosch University, which are indeed credit-bearing. While our academic core are also teaching at the University, the courses listed on our website, are presented at different levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced) and do not contribute to fulfilling degrees. For a list of courses presented by the University, please consult the website of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages

The Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University (CISU) was established at the end of 2007. Since its inception, the CISU was based at the Centre for Chinese Studies at Stellenbosch University. In 2009 however, it moved its bases to the SU International.

Directorship: Based at the SU International , the CISU is co-directed by Mr Robert Kotze from the SU International and Prof Binlan HUANG.

The CISU is committed to providing Chinese language and culture teaching resources and services at the university at large, as well as in the Western Cape of South Africa. The main mission is to accommodate and facilitate people who are interested and willing to learn Chinese language and to understand Chinese culture.

Chinese courses are offered to university students, school pupils as well as the general Stellenbosch community on a weekly basis throughout the year.
