Prof Sarah Howie

Sarah Howie is the Director at the Africa Centre for Scholarship and has an appointment as Professor in the Centre for Higher and Adult Education in the Department of Curriculum Studies, Faculty of Education. She has considerable international research experience including serving as national coordinator of a number of international studies in education and serving on international committees to design and implement international education research. She studied at Stellenbosch, University of Cape Town, Witwatersrand (Masters) and her PhD at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Her field of expertise lies in large-scale international education assessment research as well as research methodology.​

She has supervised to completion about 40 postgraduate students at Masters and Doctoral levels with most being doctoral students. She has led almost 80 research projects with several being multi-disciplinary, large-scale and international projects. Amongst others, she was the Deputy-Chair of the Board of the South African Qualifications Authority (2015-2020) and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa since 2006. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and serves on a number of national and international editorial boards including the Oxford Review of Education. Amongst a number of awards, her doctoral work on the TIMSS 1999 won the National Science and Technology Forum's prestigious prize for Most Innovative Research 2003 and she has won awards for her research leadership and supervision.

Mr Brent Abrahams

Brent Abrahams is the coordinator for the Emerging Scholars' Initiative at Stellenbosch University. He has a keen interest in research methodology, data analysis and cross-disciplinary research. He is currently completing his PhD in Conservation Ecology at Stellenbosch University. His work draws on insights from Social-Ecological Systems research, Social Network Analysis and Science Studies - to explore the relationship between research and the management of biological invasions.​

Mia Engelbrecht is the coordinator for the Stellenbosch University Unit for International Credentialing (SU-UIC), a unit within the ACS. She is responsible amongst others for the coordination and development of structures and processes of the SU-UIC. Mia has a BCom honours degree in Human Resource Management from Stellenbosch University. She has been working at SU International since 2017 where she started within the Global Education Centre before moving to the SU-UIC in 2020.​​
